When I was working with BAe in the early 90s there were a lot of people around who'd been involved with HOTOL and Interim HOTOL. Their bitterness at the programme being kicked in the balls by the government was absolutely, totally comprehensible.
(As an aside, have you read C N Hill's splendid A Vertical Empire, a history of British rocketry...?)
