I HAVE TO SHOUT...

...BECAUSE THE WALL NEXT TO ME IS VIBRATING.
They're reflooring the labs on the level below me (level 2), which is involving much drilling. Conversation is out of the question, and I'm kicking myself for not having brought my shiny new Bose noise-cancelling headphones with me from Bath yesterday. The message informing us of this work from the deputy head of school read:
This work is known to generate high noise levels and this may propagate through the building structure causing noise nuisance on Levels 2 and 1 in particular and just possibly on Level 3.
"Just possibly", my arse.
Edit: Stores are handing out free earplugs which, while they don't block all the noise, do turn it from painful levels to merely irritating. The reflooring work involves the use of powertools to strip off the cement skim that was used to level the floors in the labs, which explains the amount of noise. I feel most sorry for the blokes in stores, whose office has an open front that faces out onto the lab where the work is being done.

Date: 2004-06-08 02:08 am (UTC)Because of space issues we are currently in portacabins which main advantage is good aircon
About a month or so ago they put scaffolding up around our portacabin to do some building work in the building and for the first couple of days they were walking across the roof. Thankfully they stopped when we asked them.
The general building noise could get irritating but I generally can't hear it above the network switch I sit next too

Date: 2004-06-08 03:00 am (UTC)We had a big-ass RAID array and server sitting on the desk next to me. Thankfully it's now in the machine room, because in addition to the banshee-like howling, the air coming out of the back would disturb the papers on my desk.

Date: 2004-06-08 03:39 am (UTC)Hopefully we we finally move to the new building next year sometimes their will of though the placement of the network switches through. Given they are getting 1000m2 of machine room space you would hope so
