My own bookshelf situation has been reaching critical levels recently. I've about run out of bookshelf space (space on the bookshelves, and unoccupied walls against which to put new bookshelves). I've put a few small bookcases up in the attic (B&Q and Homebase do some cheap pine bookcases for about ten quid which are just the right size) but I'm wary about storing too much stuff up there in case the ceiling falls in.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided to experiment with double-stacking. I've made some little shelf-inserts (12cm wide, 8cm high) which fit at the back of the shelf and raise the obscured books sufficiently that I can see what they are. This should hopefully solve the bookshelf issue for a couple of years at least.
