I have to say I rather liked the film although I suspect I would have liked it slightly less had I read the book first. Moments like when it's revealed that it was V who had been torturing Evey would have been completely robbed had I known about it beforehand, for example.
View simply as a film, it's not perfect. It's hard to understand how it's all tolerated, and Evey's character is somewhat unbelievable. The fight scene with the knife trails is painfully showy and out of sync with the rest of the film. But it is visually delightful, pleasantly witty, decently intellectual and morally challenging - rare commodities in Hollywood, certainly in this kind of movie.
Viewed against the comic it fares somewhat worse. While it carries much of the feel (updated for a more modern era), V's character lacks the insanity and certainty portrayed in the book while Evey simplified path lacks the weight to carry her transformation. The film feels like it pulls its punches in a way that the comic does not.
Still, I think it's an enjoyable movie to be recommended to all.
