I was planning to stir myself into action for the purposes of deGAFIAtion (or whatever the correct term is) and go up to London for this evening's BSFA meeting. I had, however, bargained without the whims of fate and one of my colleague's inaugural lecture (whose date I had temporarily forgotten).

This is my choice: 1) I stay for the lecture, catch the 1923 train and get to the Rising Sun sometime after 2100, or 2) bunk off work at usual time, get to the Rising Sun at about 1900 and spend the rest of the evening feeling wretched and guilty.

Bah. Suggestions? Who am I likely to miss as guest?

I have no idea who the guest is (been trying to find out myself) but, on the grounds that I don't think I've ever met you I'm going to say you should come along.

But whether you do that after or instead of the lecture is another matter.

Wha? How did you get here?

Small world moment.

excuse me, I'll just go away now...

H

Nick, you are officially the patron saint of the small world. Though I'm told fire kitten is worse.

I think that [livejournal.com profile] flickgc may have got here via [livejournal.com profile] zotz.

For my part, having lived in Cambridge (and known CUSFS people), lived in Edinburgh (and known EUSF&FS people), knowing a diverse assortment of goths and geeks, and having had some past existence within fandom (even if it was a while ago, and as a dirty goddamn filker) seems to have worked wonders for my connectivity.

Actually, although it almost could have been, I think it was a Southampton / totl thing...

Ah. Could also be that (didn't your website used to look suspiciously like the 1998-era totl frontpage?)

To be honest, the boundaries have started to blur as various disparate groups have merged. My acquaintance graph is much bushier than it was only a couple of years ago, thanks to people like [livejournal.com profile] zotz moving to Cambridge, if only temporarily.

[g] Still does, other than the fact that it's down until I get around to uploading it to new server...

Really should do something about redesigning it, but I can't honestly think of a layout I prefer...

It seems as if everybody is on Nick's friends list. I have a suspicion that he is in fact a multidimensional gestalt being who runs the universe in his spare time ;o)

Actually, you're all little 1/4" squares of cardboard that I've been pushing around the board of an immensely complicated 1970s Avalon Hill wargame for the last year and a half. There was a minor hiatus last month when the cat jumped up and knocked some of the counters, but I don't think that anyone noticed, and I hope to finish the game in early 2005.

I suspect if that were the case his physical appearance would be more with the ten feet tall and fire-breathingness.

I was originally going to reply to this with something along the lines of "but *I've* seen you on teeeeveeeeeee!!", but I suspect that you've already had enough comments along those lines since the weekend.

Oh, soddit. Lecture first, pub later...

I am incredibly glad that I haven't seen it. I am scared by the number of people who *have*...

Rar - see you later, if [livejournal.com profile] swisstone hasn't scared you off!

Inugural lectures are but a one time occassion, so I'd say got to the lecture but disappear sharpish and hightail to london. Is 9pm really so late you'll miss people?

From: [identity profile] swisstone.livejournal.com
I don't think there is a guest tonight, so stay for the lecture, and don't bother going to the BSFA at all (people will start going about 9).

Yikes. I don't usually bother with this pub meet, but if you're going along, I might give [livejournal.com profile] mr_tom a prod and see if he fancies a swift half of foaming ale in the Rising Sun...

Would be good - I've only met [livejournal.com profile] mr_tom the once, and that was on an all-day barcrawl, so I only have very, very vague memories of him...

If you mean the Rising Sun on Tottenham Court Road I can confirm that they had some very nice real ale type bouze in last week (it being my local drinking hut and all)! I work just round the cornah.
